Women in Maritime – IMO and WISTA International Survey 2021

In February this year, IMO, together with WISTA International, launched a study to collect and analyse data on the number of women employed in the maritime sector, a key practical outcome resulting from the 2019 World Maritime theme Empowering Women in the Maritime Community. Through IMO Circular Letter No.4370, Member States, NGOs and IGOs are encouraged to support this initiative by participating in an online survey.

Having comparable data and a reliable baseline are key components when creating programmes and proposing policies that will increase the participation of women in maritime. The IMO will also be incorporating lessons learned from this survey in future activities. They are therefore encouraging feedback from NGOs to ensure that they are gathering meaningful data that will help shape the sustainability of a diverse maritime sector.
