OCIMF and the International Association of Oil and Gas Producers (IOGP) have a longstanding relationship based on our shared commitment to supporting a global marine industry that causes no harm to people or the environment.

As such, aligned with OCIMF’s advocacy strategy, we would like to take the opportunity to promote IOGP’s Life-Saving Rules to our members.

IOGP has developed a set of Life-Saving Rules, based on industry experience and fatality data, to give workers a simple set of actions to protect themselves and others from fatalities. Many companies have their own successful life-saving rules (or equivalent), and this is not designed to supersede any effective systems that are already in place within your organisation, but a further opportunity for companies to align and standardise important safety messages. Benefits of standardisation of life-saving rules include:

  • Better transfer of knowledge, experience and lessons learned.
  • Increased individual awareness of critical safeguards that prevent fatalities.
  • Progress towards an industry-wide common safety language.
  • Ease of implementation and consistent use by contractors and operators.

The goal is to make these rules visible and clear to frontline workers, ensure work is not started until the lifesaving controls and/or safeguards have been confirmed, and enable our industry to consistently work safely.
