Vessel chartering companies and operators in some regions experience difficulties with inconsistent vessel identification.
The new OCIMF ID scheme offers a solution to this problem. An OCIMF ID number will now be automatically assigned to all vessels and barges, providing a consistent numbering scheme for all vessels registered on SIRE. Existing national or regional identifiers are still the vessel’s primary identifier.
The scheme aims to:
- Identify the national and regional schemes used by barge operators today.
- Allow vessel operators to specify national or regional identifiers when defining their equipment in SIRE.
- Improve data quality through vessel operator review of fleet and user base information.
